About our Parish - A walk around St. Francis de Sales Church

Statue of Our Lady

Statue of Our Lady

This beautiful hand-carved statue was presented by Fr. Bernard Medd's family on November 11th 1979 in his memory.

It was officially blessed and placed in its present position at the 10am Mass on December 23rd 1979.

The Kneelers
The beautiful kneelers seen in the Transept and around the Church were made by a group of ladies in the Parish. They were paid for by a legacy left to the parish by the late Monica Stekic.

They remind us of Charities supported by the Parish, deceased parishioners and relations and special events.
Memorial to Fr. King

The lovely Baptismal Font, on the left of the High Altar was donated by the parish in memory of Fr. King.

It was designed by Mr John Binns and made by Mr Frank Cuddy.

The pottery bowl was made by Mr J. Grindon-Welch.

The Pascal Candle

To hold the larger Paschal Candle securely, some alterations to the existing stand were needed. During 2003, Mr Malcoml Cantwell not only modified the candle holder but also made a beautiful circular container for the stand which holds the Advent wreath and flowers when the candle is decorated during the Easter season.

To complement the container on the Paschal Candle stand Malcolm also designed a magnificent container for the base of the Baptismal Font.

The Paschal Candle for 2003 was painted by Christopher Hall.

The beautifully turned wooden altar candlesticks were also created by Malcolm and presented to the Church.

St. Francis de Sales Picture

St. Francis de Sales

The picture hanging on the wall of the transept was donated by Mr & Mrs Collins, former parishioners. They now live in Annecy, France, where St. Francis is buried. St. Francis de Sales is the patron saint of journalists and a portrait of him hangs in the crypt of St. Ethelreda's, Fleet Street, London.

"We must never so form our opinions as not to be ready, if necessary, willingly to give them up." - A quote from St. Francis de Sales.

Ciborium
The pottery ciborium, used frequently on Sundays, was one made and used when the Pope visited England in 1982, and purchased by the Parish.
Sanctuary Window
This window was given by Dame Ann Parker Bowles in memory of her husband Derek.
Stations of the Cross

Station of the Cross
The stations around the wall of the Church were purchased by the parish from the Fr. Bernard Medd Memorial Fund and mounted by Mr Colin Brooks. They were blessed and placed in the Church on the feast of Exultation of the Cross, 1980.
The Church Benches
These were purchased from a redundant church, and cut down and made to fit by Fr. King. He was a clever craftsman, who did a lot of work including the original light fittings, the holy water font and the lecterns.
The Parish Hall
The building of this extension was completed in September 1978. Mr Tom Molyneux, and his team took full responsibility for the building, and decorations.

It was blessed on October 22nd 1978, and has been used daily ever since.
